Argumentative Writing Course:
Learn Editorial-Style Writing

Part-time 8-week Course for High School and College Students

This program is an opportunity to learn how to write editorial (op-ed) pieces that put forth arguments about important social issues you feel passionate about. 

Course Description

The course includes weekly lessons, discussions, activities, and assignments to help you develop the skills necessary for writing argumentative, editorial-style pieces.

Each week includes:

  • Live Lectures exploring one key aspect of argumentative writing and engaging is discussion with instructors and classmates
  • Article Assignments that allow you apply the skills discussed in the lecture
  • Publishing Your Writing on our site and social media platforms.
  • Office hours available by appointments

Bi-weekly optional workshops will be offered to dive deeper into key writing skills

Work Environment

Class will meet via Zoom for 2 hours each week with set deadlines for submitting topics, outlines, and articles throughout the week. Instructors will provide individualized feedback on each piece and will be available for questions. 

Additionally,

  • While students are completing this course, they will simultaneously be part of the writing team on the student-run publication Students 4SC
  • Select students will have the opportunity to become editors 
  • Students will be eligible to apply to stay on as part of the writing team after completing the course

This program is designed to be completed concurrently with other responsibilities. You should expect to dedicate a total of approximately 40 hours over the course of 8 weeks.  

Eligibility

  • Language: English 
  • Age: 10th grade and up 
  • Location: Anywhere! 
  • Materials: Have a computer/tablet with access to reliable Internet
  • Commitment: The program is designed to be completed concurrently with summer school, employment, and/or other personal and family responsibilities.

  • First day of class: June 28th, 2021
  • Class meeting day/time: Mondays 4-6pm EDT
